Surf Music: 15 versions of Pipeline

Friday, March 18, 2005

Could there be any music better than Surf Music? Possibly. Maybe in some dipshit alternate universe. Whatever, today I'm posting links to 15 different versions of the classic surf anthem Pipeline. Why? Because THIS is the internet. I can do what I want.

The Chantays:   The Classic Version. The Ultimate.

The Ventures:   Pretty Good Version from a pretty good band.

The Stingrays:   Not Bad at all, really. Classic Surf.

The Balboas:   Pretty Rockin' Version. Me Likey.

The Golden Years:   Japanese Punk Version.

The Muffinmates:   German Surf Version. Mmmmmmm...

Agent Orange:   SuperPunk Version. High Energy Music.

The Cutbacks:   Another American Surf band. They surf for real.

Ambient Music Version:   Like, Whatever Dude.

Greg McSulla:   From The Planktones site.

The Enigmatics: Tulsa Alternative band. You be the judge.

Doctor Surf:   Another German Surf Band. Nice name.

Bobby Johnson:   Some guy in his garage.

The Spoilers:   I dunno. A Russian surf band?

Another Unknown Band:   But good, baby, real good.

UPDATE 4/11: The 16th Version

Via Espew comes the Dick Dale and Stevie Ray version which I could not seem to locate online at first. Lots of purists seem to hate this version but who gives a shit about them, eh? Enjoy.

Dear Blog,

You missed the best ever version of pipeline by Junior Brown (www.juniorbown.com)! Junior does a song called Surf Medley that combines Pipeline and Secret Agent Man. Junior plays this wonderful song on an instrument he invented called the guit-steel.

Don't know who this fellow is... or was (God Bless His Soul, he had good taste) but here is Junior's version!

(Right side, under audio & video. Caption says "Tom's Favorites: Surf Medley by Junior Brown with Wes Montgomery"

Thanks so much for that link. I've listened to the tune about 10 times already. Although it's not strictly a "version" of Pipeline it's some great, clean guitar work...wish I had a Dick Dale version to post...

Here's another version of 'Pipeline' from an album Bruce Johnston put out in the mid 70's called 'Going Public'.

I have 2 versions of "Pipeline" ..
Pipeline by Chantays
Pipeline by Ventures which is a newer recorded CD which is not the 1960s cover the Ventures did. Does anyone know of a 1960s era CD that might have the older Ventures version? Thanks
