James Dean in New York by Roy Schatt

I was searching on Google for a reference to a James Dean photo exhibit taking place in Berlin, but could find nothing.
Thought it might make a good post. Since I am stymied there, I'll present links to some good photo gallery pages of Dean starting with the famous James Dean New York 1954 series by Roy Schatt

Homebrew Computer Club Newsletter logo

I saw an interesting program last night called Revolution OS which basically talked about the GNU project and OPEN SOURCE movement, but also delved back into computer prehistory and touched on this club that a lot of the early computer wanks belonged to. The founders of Apple Computers, among others, met to discuss the brand new Altair 8800, Altair Basic, and programming in general; such early collaborations are generally credited with giving rise to the personal computer movement and industry.

CBGB's Hangs On

Hilly Kristal

"CBGB's battle to stay alive received a major boost yesterday, as Manhattan Civil Court Judge Joan M. Kenney ruled that it does not owe its landlord, the Bowery Residents' Committee, any back rent and declined a request to evict the club. However, the club's future is still uncertain until the BRC grants it a new lease."

Microdot Series

Tuesday, August 09, 2005

Now everyone looking for ACID will come to this page. I've done a redesign of a series of very short micros called Microdot. The stories were written about a year ago I guess, and I've done several versions using different CSS designs. You can see them here. I'm afraid there's no backlink, and the return link doesn't return you, but enjoy them anyway.

Also, before I forget, there is a set of amazing fonts at the Luc Devroye font pages. Great for page and background decoration if you're into web design. I can't believe I missed that one.

Rolling Stones Altamont poster

The concert at Altamont Speedway has always had significance for me. Symbolic of the end of an era of hope and promise, the concert was marked by violence when one man was beaten to death by Hell's Angels and three other people died from various causes. This post is meant to showcase photographs from the concert, but they are scarce on the web. The links below represent about an hours surf-time:

Henry Darger: Outsider Art

Hands of Fire

In the Realms...

Henry Darger was a reclusive nobody who lived in Chicago for most of his life yet managed to produce a 15,000 page novel called The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, as caused by the Child Slave Rebellion.

"The story recounts the wars between nations on an enormous and unnamed planet, of which Earth is a moon. The confict is provoked by the Glandelinians, who practice child enslavement. After hundreds of ferocious battles, the good Christian nation of Abbiennia forces the 'haughty' Glandelinians to give up their barbarous ways. The heroines of Darger's history are the seven Vivian sisters, Abbiennian princesses. They are aided in their struggles by a panoply of heroes, who are sometimes the author's alter-egos. The battles are full of vivid incident: charging armies, ominous captures, alarms and explosions, the appearances of demons and dragons."

This was not his only foray into the world of fiction. Darger wrote a sequel to the novel called The Further Adventures of The Vivian Girls in Chicago, comprising some 8000 pages!

Henry Darger's Room

He also produced over the years a massive collection of paintings, collages, and other graphic forms, eventually becoming a respected figure in the world of Outsider Art, but not until years after his death in 1973, a forgotten solitary man who died in a poorhouse.

The Grapes of Wrath

Dust Jacket for The Grapes of Wrath

"A portrait of the bitter conflict between the powerful and the powerless, of one man's fierce reaction to injustice, and of a woman's quiet, stoical strength, The Grapes of Wrath is a landmark of American literature, one that captures the horrors of the Great Depression as it probes into the very nature of equality and justice in America."
